October 10, 1997. Philadelphia, PA.
As you walk around Center City, can you identify Federal,
Colonial, Gothic Revival, and Second Empire buildings? Do you know what
holds up a skyscraper? how to read the carvings on City Hall? what life
was like in Ben Franklin's Philadelphia?
For answers to these questions, and a whole lot more, sign up for
Introduction to the Architecture of Philadelphia, a twelve-week course
sponsored by Foundation for Architecture. The classes, taught by
professional architects and historians, will be held at 17th and JFK in
Center City. To register, call Ken Hinde at 569-3187.
The course begins January 14, 1998, and continues for twelve
consecutive Wednesdays, 6-9 PM ending March 26. Cost is $225 for
members, $300 for non-members.
Topics include a history of world architecture, the social history of
Philadelphia, styles of architecture, and the future of Philadelphia
architecture. Coverage is equivalent to a one-semester college course.
The course, offered once each year, is open to everyone. Participants
have runj the gamut from art students to corporate managers, real
estate specialists, newcomers and Philadelphia-born boosters. Those who
finish successfully may apply to become volunteer guides in the
Foundation's very successful summer walking tour program.
This year, the Foundation especially hopes to recruit guides who will
lead tours of Chinatown, African-American Philadelphia, and
Architecture/Sculpture.
This course earns rave reviews every year: "Enjoyable way to learn!" "I
can use this knowledge in my business!" "Wonderful for every citizen of
Philadelphia!"
