About Cathy
Goodwin
Cathy works exclusively with
Independent Professionals, such as
consultants, financial professionals, lawyers, coaches, and designers.
Her clients want to attract more clients and sell
more information products with less effort. Some want to write books to
promote their businesses, stand out from the pack and get recognized as
experts.
Based in Seattle, Cathy offers copywriting, coaching and consulting
services to
clients all over the world. In her former life, she acquired a Ph.D.
and spent 20 years as a marketing professor.
As a professional writer, Cathy
has written feature and humor articles for print
and online media. Her
online articles have been reprinted and translated into several
languages. Cathy’s book,
Making the
Big Move: How to Transform
Relocation into a Creative Life Transition, originally
published by New
Harbinger Publications, can be
downloaded
here. Her book publisher gave her the ultimate
compliment: “You don’t write like a Ph.D.”
Cathy has been interviewed by media ranging from KQED (San Francisco),
Denver Post, Ivanhoe News Service, Boardroom, USA Today Online and
dozens more. Her marketing and business articles appear all over the
Internet and in print. She is a
popular
professional speaker who combines solid
information with a humorous, irreverent style.
Getting
into Copywriting
When Cathy first developed
information products to sell on her website, she wanted to sound
professional, as befitting a PhD and former college professor.
But her products were gathering cyberdust...until she learned the
requirements of writing for the Internet. As a writer and
marketer, she took to copywriting like a cat to cream.
Cathy’s ebook sales began to soar and clients appeared as if by magic.
Now a day
rarely goes by without a sales receipt landing in her inbox.
Other service professionals
began asking Cathy for help with their websites. She served as a
"copy coach" for boot camps and live events held by internationally
known Lorrie
Morgan-Ferrero, her first copywriting mentor. And she wrote copy
for
campaigns that turned ordinary books into best-sellers.
Life
Before Copywriting
In her former life, before her
Internet marketing businesses, Cathy earned an MBA from the
Wharton Business School. She served time in a few
corporations, where her performance reviews scored off the chart under
“creative” and “maverick.”
Recognizing she would never
fit into a corporate hierarchy, she completed a
PhD at
University of California, Berkeley. She spent twenty years as a
college
professor, developing a notable publication record and teaching MBA
students in live classrooms and online. Always adventurous and off the
beaten track, she taught at universities throughout the US, including
Alaska, and stayed long enough to get tenure at a Canadian university
before moving on to her next adventure. Her research interests
focused mainly on customer service. She presented dozens of research
papers at conferences in the US, Canada and Europe.
During these years, one of Cathy’s proudest accomplishments was
editing a newsletter for a
professional consumer psychology organization for six years – a record
for the job. She created a humor column that satirized academic life,
earning wide recognition in her field and guaranteeing that she’d never
be invited to serve in a serious administrative position.
And
today...
Copywriting, consulting and
copy coaching allow Cathy to combine her two passions –
writing and marketing strategy. She does this by helping clients
translate their strengths, their position and their brand into
compelling marketing materials.
"Each
project feels like renovating a house and finding buried treasure
hidden in the attic." As an experienced researcher and
interviewer, Cathy
has a special gift for identifying benefits, themes and positioning
strategies that clients don’t realize they have. It’s like finding a
genuine antique in the attic of a house and telling the owners, “You’ve
got a money maker here.”
Cathy lives in Seattle with 2 cats and a
dog, all mixed-breed shelter
rescues. For fun, she devours murder mysteries and holds season tickets
for the Seattle symphony, the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the WNBA
Seattle Storm.
Contact Cathy when you're ready
to develop your own marketing message and materials. Check out her copywriting blog...and
oh yes, the dog has a blog too.
“Clients
say they like to work with me for many different reasons.
"Some say
that I’m direct and down-to-earth. I can talk to web designers in
the language of HTML and CSS, and I often use humor to get a point
across.
"And others appreciate meeting their tight deadlines. Whenever
possible, we stay ahead of
schedule. "
